Microsoft releases its own Linux distribution

Microsoft surprised the open source community at the Open Source Summit by announcing Azure Linux 4.0, its first full fledged general purpose cloud distribution. Based on Fedora Linux, the operating system is heavily optimized for server side cloud infrastructure and will soon be available to run locally on Windows desktops via WSL. This release marks a historical shift for Microsoft, effectively admitting that its most critical AI and enterprise workloads, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft 365, now run on a Linux foundation.
