Meta secretly depended on Google’s Gemini until Google cut off its access
A new report reveals that Meta has been secretly using Google's Gemini models for crucial internal tasks, including customer service, advertising tools, and content moderation. Despite developing its own open-source Llama models, Meta turned to Google's AI because it outperformed its own internal systems. However, Google recently had to restrict Meta's access to Gemini because the massive demand for AI tokens outpaced what Google's infrastructure could supply. This capacity wall has delayed internal projects at Meta and forced the company to instruct employees to ration their AI usage. Because Meta lacks its own cloud infrastructure like its rivals, it remains heavily dependent on competing tech giants while rushing to expand its own data centers.
