Rocket Lab makes its biggest bet yet with Iridium acquisition

Rocket Lab has announced an 8 billion dollar acquisition of Iridium Communications, a major satellite operator with a profitable network of 80 low-Earth-orbit satellites and millions of global customers. CEO Peter Beck says the deal will transform Rocket Lab into a fully integrated space services company, combining its launch capabilities with Iridium’s valuable L-band spectrum and established telecommunications business. Iridium’s CEO Matt Desch believes the merger will accelerate new services in IoT, aviation, maritime, national security and positioning technologies. The acquisition positions Rocket Lab to compete more directly with SpaceX and Blue Origin, both of which operate launch systems and satellite constellations. To achieve Beck’s vision of a “self-launching space superpower,” Rocket Lab must successfully complete development of its medium-lift Neutron rocket, which has faced delays and technical issues. The deal marks one of the boldest moves yet in the commercial space industry.
