Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated at the G7 summit that banning minors from social media is not an effective standalone solution, arguing such restrictions are easily bypassed. She emphasized that shifting responsibility to families is counterproductive and that platforms must be pressured to enforce safety measures. While Italy is not opposed to an under-16 ban in principle, the government will not introduce legislation and will leave the debate to parliament.

Her stance contrasts with recent moves by the UK, France, and Canada, all of which are implementing strict age-based restrictions on social media and AI chatbots.

Early evidence from Australia shows that enforcement is difficult without strong platform cooperation, supporting Meloni’s argument. The G7 leaders ultimately endorsed a declaration focused on safety-by-design and platform accountability rather than outright bans.
