Google Cuts Play Store Fees and Opens Door to Third Party Payments

Google is reducing Play Store fees and expanding support for third party payment options across the EU, UK and US starting June 30, marking a major shift in its app store strategy. Developers will pay 10 percent on the first 1 million dollars in revenue and between 20 and 25 percent above that, with additional reductions available through new performance based programs. Google will also allow external web payment links, giving developers more freedom to steer users away from Google Play billing while still owing a platform fee. The move contrasts with Apple’s more rigid approach as both companies face regulatory and legal pressure over app store practices. Google may be seeking goodwill with regulators, but it remains unclear whether developers will meaningfully shift payments outside the Play Store.
