SpaceSail Accelerates Satellite Deployment in Bid to Rival Musk’s Network
China’s SpaceSail is a state-backed satellite internet project aiming to challenge Starlink’s dominance by rapidly expanding its low Earth orbit constellation. Although it currently operates only around 200 satellites compared to Starlink’s more than 10,000, the company plans to reach 648 by the end of 2026 and over 15,000 in the long term. SpaceSail is strategically targeting markets where Starlink has faced political or regulatory barriers, securing early deals in Brazil, Kazakhstan and even partnering with Airbus for in-flight connectivity. Analysts note that SpaceSail benefits from strong government support but still faces domestic competition from China’s SatNet. Despite its smaller scale, SpaceSail’s geopolitical positioning and aggressive expansion could make it a significant global competitor.
