Gemini hits 1 billion users faster than any Google product
Google announced that Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest‑growing product in the company’s history. Unlike passive usage inside Gmail or Search, this milestone counts only people who actively open the Gemini app or web interface. Google says 63 percent of Gemini users rely on voice input, and a growing share are “voice‑only,” while 20 percent of Gemini Live users share their camera or screen for assistance. Students are heavy users as well, with 38 percent of school‑related queries including attachments, prompting Google to develop new study tools. Gemini users generate around 150 million images per day, all watermarked with SynthID, though the sheer volume raises concerns about future content authenticity. Despite the growth, Google faces internal challenges: key researchers have left, Demis Hassabis stepped back from leadership and Gemini 3.5 Pro has been delayed. Reports suggest Google is unhappy with Gemini’s coding performance compared to OpenAI and Anthropic. The question now is whether Gemini’s momentum can survive slowing model releases and rising competition.
