France is investing 500 million euros into a national quantum computing push, aiming to become a global leader in a field where Europe has a real chance to compete. The effort centers on startups like Alice & Bob, whose cat qubit technology could drastically reduce error correction needs and accelerate practical quantum machines. Through the PROQCIMA program, France is funding five different qubit architectures in parallel, creating a competitive pipeline toward a fault tolerant quantum computer by 2030. Despite strong competition from US giants like Google and IBM, France believes its physics talent, lower energy costs, and diverse approaches give it a unique opportunity to lead the next major computing revolution.
