A new preprint study finds that data centers generate heat islands extending up to 6 miles, raising surrounding land temperatures by an average of 2 degrees Celsius. Researchers warn that these microclimates can worsen air pollution, alter rainfall patterns, and increase heat related health risks for millions of people living near major data center hubs. Regions in Mexico, Spain, and Brazil already show significant temperature spikes linked to long term data center expansion. The study suggests both hardware improvements and more energy efficient AI system design are needed to reduce the growing environmental impact.
