UK Orders Google to Make Search Rankings More Transparent
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued legally binding requirements ordering Google to make its search ranking algorithms substantially more transparent. Driven by systemic complaints from British businesses regarding unfair and unannounced algorithm updates, the new mandates force Google to rank organic search results and its generative "AI Overviews" using objective, non-discriminatory criteria. Furthermore, the regulator is mandating a data portability rule within three months, legally forcing Google to let users seamlessly port their personal search history to competing platforms and alternative services.
Google has been granted a six-month window to implement these structural ranking adjustments and establish an official, transparent dispute mechanism for affected businesses.
