Uber Turns Millions of Cars Into a Global Sensor Network
Uber plans to equip its drivers’ vehicles with sensors to collect real-world data for autonomous vehicle companies and other AI developers. The initiative, part of Uber’s AV Labs program, aims to turn millions of cars into a global sensor network that can feed data into training models for self-driving systems. CTO Praveen Naga said the bottleneck for AV progress is data, not technology, and Uber wants to “democratize” access to it. The company already partners with 25 AV firms and is building an “AV cloud” to share labeled sensor data and run model simulations.
