Smartphone market hits 13-year low
Global smartphone shipments dropped 11 percent year-over-year in Q2 2026, marking the weakest second quarter since 2013 as a severe DRAM and NAND shortage pushed production costs higher and forced widespread price hikes. Samsung reclaimed the number one spot with 24 percent market share, driven by strong Galaxy S26 demand, fewer price increases in key regions, and aggressive promotions. Apple followed with a record 20 percent share, growing shipments 3 percent thanks to the iPhone 17 lineup and stable pricing despite ongoing weakness in China. Meanwhile, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo suffered double-digit declines as rising memory costs hit budget and mid-range devices hardest. Analysts expect shipments to fall around 14 percent for the full year, with memory shortages likely persisting into 2027.
