Reddit finally realizes its karma system has been driving away new users

Reddit is introducing major infrastructure and moderation updates aimed at making participation easier for new users and reducing reliance on account age and karma as gatekeeping tools. The platform plans to shift toward AI-driven abuse prevention systems that can better distinguish genuine newcomers from bots or trolls. Its new AI moderation suite, Rules Hub, is expanding from 700 communities to all new communities, with full rollout expected later this year. Using large language models, Rules Hub interprets the intent behind community rules and handles nuanced cases more effectively. Reddit is also improving tools that help moderators communicate rules and assist users with setting flair. Additional changes include migrating Old Reddit’s moderator workflows to the platform’s newer backend. These updates align with Reddit’s broader goal of converting weekly active users into daily users, following strong quarterly earnings but concerns over unstable search referral traffic.
