People now edit their writing to avoid sounding like AI

A new study from Use.AI surveying more than 12,600 people across the US, UK, EU and Latin America reveals a growing social stigma around sounding like AI. Nearly half of respondents worry their writing could be mistaken for AI‑generated text, and 39% actively change how they write to avoid that impression. People associate AI content with perfect grammar, predictable transitions and emotionally flat tone, prompting many creators to intentionally add imperfections or shorten sentences to appear more human. Around one‑third say they would think less of a colleague or creator who used AI without disclosure, even though most still accept AI for brainstorming, research and editing. The report warns that skilled creators may start lowering the quality of their work just to avoid being labeled as AI, undermining the very productivity gains AI is supposed to provide.
