OpenAI reportedly plans an AI-first smartphone with no apps

A new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that OpenAI may be developing its own smartphone in partnership with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare. Instead of traditional apps, the device would rely on AI agents capable of handling tasks directly, giving OpenAI deeper system access than what Apple and Google currently allow. The phone is expected to continuously understand user context and combine on-device models with cloud-based AI for different workloads. Specifications could be finalized by late 2026 or early 2027, with mass production targeted for 2028.
