Meta bets on space solar power to fuel its next generation of AI data centers

Meta has signed a groundbreaking agreement with Overview Energy to receive up to 1 gigawatt of space-based solar power beamed from geosynchronous orbit directly to existing solar farms. The system uses low-intensity near-infrared light, avoiding the safety and regulatory issues of lasers or microwaves while extending solar generation into nighttime hours. If successful, the technology could solve one of the biggest challenges in AI infrastructure: securing continuous renewable energy for power-hungry data centers. Commercial delivery is targeted for 2030, though major technical and regulatory hurdles remain.
