Google signs Pentagon AI deal despite internal protests
Google has reportedly signed a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense allowing its AI models to be used for classified military work under the clause “any lawful government purpose.” The agreement follows internal backlash from over 600 employees who urged CEO Sundar Pichai to reject military use of AI. The deal marks a major shift from Google’s 2018 withdrawal from Project Maven and raises renewed concerns about AI’s role in surveillance and autonomous weapons. Despite controversy, Google says it will maintain oversight to prevent misuse in mass surveillance or lethal systems.
