The European Commission plans to reserve two‑thirds of the EU’s 2 GHz mobile‑satellite spectrum exclusively for European operators, limiting Starlink, Amazon Kuiper and other non‑EU firms to bidding for the remaining third. The move is part of Brussels’ broader push for strategic autonomy in space, driven by concerns over dependence on US satellite systems and recent geopolitical tensions. The reserved portion is expected to benefit the EU‑backed IRIS2 constellation, which aims to provide secure governmental services starting in 2030. While non‑EU companies are not fully excluded, the decision structurally favors European direct‑to‑device services over American competitors.
