California Launches Public Tracker for AI‑Linked Job Losses

California has launched a public portal that tracks AI‑related job losses across the state, intended as an early warning system for potential large‑scale displacement. Built in collaboration with the California Employment Development Department and the California Policy Lab, the tracker uses unemployment insurance claims combined with AI exposure metrics to estimate which groups are most affected. The tool allows users to explore trends by age, gender, education, industry and region, with early data suggesting that workers aged 25 to 35 and women may be more vulnerable. The initiative comes amid rising political pressure to address AI‑driven job disruption, especially in a state dominated by major tech companies. Researchers caution, however, that the tracker cannot definitively prove whether any specific job loss was caused by AI, as broader economic factors may also be at play.
