Apple unveils A20 Pro, its first 2nm smartphone chip
Apple has introduced the A20 Pro, its first 2‑nanometer smartphone chip, powering the new iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Debuting at Apple’s first keynote led by CEO John Ternus, the A20 Pro brings major CPU, GPU and neural‑engine upgrades, including a 6‑core CPU with two super‑cores that are 20% faster and a 7‑core GPU offering a 40% performance boost. The chip features dual neural engines totaling 32 cores, twice‑as‑fast FP8 compute and 50% wider memory bandwidth.
Apple redesigned the chip’s packaging so the silicon attaches directly to a much larger vapor chamber, enabling up to 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
The A20 Pro also supports Apple’s new C2 modem, replacing Qualcomm in most models and adding mmWave 5G in the US.
Battery life sees major gains, with Apple claiming up to 36 hours of video playback on the 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.
The iPhone Duo also benefits from the A20 Pro, offering long battery life, dual displays, Touch ID, and a new under‑screen FaceTime camera.
