Apple Sells Off Part of Its Failed Car Project to Waymo

Waymo has purchased Apple’s former 5,500‑acre autonomous‑vehicle proving ground in Wittmann, Arizona, for $220 million, expanding its already large network of closed‑course testing facilities. The site includes a city‑style course, a high‑speed oval, a freeway loop, and a vehicle‑dynamics area — all purpose‑built for self‑driving development. Apple originally bought the property in 2021 for Project Titan, its now‑cancelled car effort. Waymo will use the facility to support rider‑only testing, motion‑control development, training workflows, and future expansion as it scales its robotaxi fleet, which is approaching 4,000 vehicles. The acquisition strengthens Waymo’s growing presence in Arizona, its first commercial robotaxi market.
