Apple explores Chinese DRAM to counter rising memory prices
Apple has officially started testing DRAM memory chips from China's state-backed ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). The company is running these components through technical validation to mitigate severe memory shortages caused by AI server demand. While CXMT is blacklisted by the Pentagon, commercial sales to U.S. companies remain legally permitted. Sourcing from CXMT would grant Apple a fourth major supplier, providing massive leverage against current market giants Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. To protect this potential supply chain, Apple CEO Tim Cook is lobbying Washington for assurances that CXMT will not be placed on the stricter Commerce Department embargo list in the future.
