Apple and Brussels hold “constructive” meeting with no progress on Siri AI
A high-level video call between the European Union's technology chief Henna Virkkunen and Apple's outgoing CEO Tim Cook has failed to break the regulatory deadlock surrounding Siri AI. Apple previously confirmed that its rebuilt voice assistant will remain blocked on iPhones and iPads in Europe due to compliance conflicts with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). While Apple claims the DMA's strict interoperability mandates would force it to compromise user privacy by granting third-party assistants deep system access, Brussels views this opening as essential for fair platform competition. The restriction uniquely targets iOS and iPadOS, meaning European users will still access the new Siri on macOS, visionOS, and watchOS later this year. This latest standoff underscores the increasingly icy relationship between the Commission and Apple, which is already facing massive antitrust fines over its App Store policies.
