US and Europe Clash Over Selling Older Chip Tech to China

Europe is pushing back against Washington's proposed MATCH Act, which would block Chinese chipmakers from accessing Western semiconductor equipment. The Netherlands is particularly concerned because ASML, Europe's most valuable company and the sole producer of advanced lithography machines, relies on China for 19 percent of its system sales. The bill would restrict not only ASML's cutting edge EUV tools, which are already banned, but also older deep ultraviolet immersion machines that China can still purchase. Dutch Trade Minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma traveled to Washington to warn that the legislation could severely impact the Netherlands and European industry. The MATCH Act has not yet reached a full vote and may need to be bundled into a larger legislative package to pass.
