Sony’s evolving business model reduces pressure for a fast PS6 launch
Sony still hasn’t committed to a launch date for the PS6, despite widespread expectations of a 2027 release. CEO Hiroki Totoki says the company is holding off due to rising component costs and supply pressures caused by the AI boom, which is driving shortages in memory and other key hardware. Sony’s business has also evolved, relying heavily on entertainment IP across movies, music and games, meaning the next console is no longer the sole engine of growth. Major franchises like The Last of Us and God of War generate value beyond hardware, reducing pressure to rush a new PlayStation to market. AI is both complicating production and helping Sony internally, with tools assisting creative tasks such as automating hair animation. A 2027 launch remains possible, but Sony is waiting for market conditions to stabilize before committing. Meanwhile, Sony is strengthening the current PlayStation ecosystem ahead of major releases like Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to give the PS5 another significant commercial boost and further reduce the need to accelerate the PS6 timeline.
