Researchers say LG TVs can record audio even when powered off

A new investigation by Gamers Nexus claims that LG’s smart OLED TVs track user behavior extensively, including viewing patterns across streaming apps, cable, and even local media inputs. The TVs reportedly scan home Wi‑Fi networks, collect information about connected devices without permission, and send the data to LG Ad Solutions for targeted advertising. Researchers also uncovered a serious security flaw that could allow hackers to record audio through the TV’s built‑in microphone even when the device is powered off. Alarmingly, unplugging the TV or disconnecting it from the internet does not delete stored recordings, which can later be transmitted once the TV reconnects. Additional vulnerabilities include remote‑code‑execution risks that could expose user data, though details remain undisclosed while researchers notify LG. This follows earlier criticism of LG for monitors that auto‑installed apps and displayed ads without user consent. LG strongly denies the allegations, stating that TVs only process voice data when users activate voice controls and that device scanning is standard smart‑home functionality.
