OpenAI released an AI assistant for law firms

OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a specialized GPT-6 Astra configuration designed to support legal professionals with advanced research, analysis, and workflow tools. The system integrates a new Legal Search Index that covers over 230 million URLs, including U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, and administrative decisions. Astra for Law significantly improves research accuracy, delivering 40 percent better correctness compared to GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. It also retrieves more relevant case passages and provides deeper grounding in authoritative sources. The platform includes 26 partner-built plugins and 47 community plugins, connecting tools from Thomson Reuters, Harvey, Legora, and iManage. Early adopters like Latham & Watkins, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, and Sullivan & Cromwell are already building advanced applications such as agreement analyzers, diligence systems, and IPO preparation tools. OpenAI is also introducing strict governance controls through its Trusted Access Program, ensuring confidentiality and compliance for legal workflows. Astra for Law marks a major step in AI’s direct integration into high-stakes legal practice.
