‘Not built right the first time’ — Musk’s xAI is starting over again, again

xAI is undergoing another major rebuild as Elon Musk admits the company “was not built right the first time.” Multiple co-founders and senior engineers have recently departed, largely due to xAI’s struggle to compete with Anthropic and OpenAI in the lucrative market for AI coding tools. Musk has brought in SpaceX and Tesla executives to evaluate staff and is now personally reviewing rejected applicants to rebuild the team. Despite the turmoil, new hires from Cursor and the continued development of the Macrohard and Digital Optimus agent projects suggest Musk is still pushing for an ambitious long‑term vision.
