Microsoft unveils MAJOR improvements coming to Windows 11 this year
Microsoft has officially confirmed a sweeping overhaul of Windows 11, addressing nearly every major complaint users have had over the past two years. The company says it is “evolving how Windows is built behind the scenes to raise the quality bar,” focusing on three pillars: Performance, Reliability, and Craft. Improvements include dramatically reduced RAM usage, faster app responsiveness, major File Explorer upgrades, better WSL performance, and more stable drivers.
Crucially, Microsoft is bringing back the ability to move the Taskbar — one of the most requested features — and reducing ads and Copilot placements across the OS. Windows Update will become far less intrusive, allowing users to pause updates indefinitely and reducing forced restarts. The Start menu and other UI components will migrate to native WinUI for smoother performance.
Internally, this initiative is codenamed Windows K2, and Microsoft has postponed other projects to prioritize fixing Windows 11’s reputation. Many of these improvements will roll out to Insiders over the coming months.
