Microsoft has begun quietly removing Copilot branding and interface elements from core Windows 11 apps as part of a broader cleanup effort. In recent Insider builds, Notepad has replaced its prominent Copilot button with a subtle “Writing tools” icon, even though AI features like rewrite and summarize remain. In the Snipping Tool, the Copilot button has been removed entirely, with no option to re‑enable it. Microsoft admits it pushed Copilot too aggressively across Windows and now plans to scale back unnecessary entry points in apps like Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Widgets. The shift doesn’t remove AI capabilities — it simply tones down the branding and visibility, signaling a move toward quieter, more integrated background functionality rather than in‑your‑face AI features.
