Micron’s Chief Business Officer, Sumit Sadana, has subtly implied that Apple’s aggressive pricing negotiations contributed to the current global memory shortage. Sadana explained that intense buyer pressure in 2023 forced negative margins, which effectively halted critical industry capacity expansions. These remarks emerged right after Apple enacted sweeping price hikes across most of its hardware lines, excluding the iPhone. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously defended the price increases by blaming skyrocketing memory costs driven by the AI server boom. While Apple claimed it was forced to pass these expenses to consumers, suppliers like Micron argue that Apple's previous hard bargaining laid the groundwork for the current supply crisis.
