Meta VP Warns Enterprises Have Just 20 Months to Rebuild Infrastructure for AI Agents
At the VB Transform 2026 conference, Meta's VP of Engineering, Barak Yagour, warned that organizations have roughly 20 months to rebuild their IT infrastructure to support the rapid rise of autonomous AI agents. Yagour revealed that agentic queries hitting Meta's data systems skyrocketed 30-fold in just six months, breaking traditional assumptions regarding system capacity, user identity, and development velocity. He explained that a single engineer can now easily spawn thousands of automated subagents, generating unprecedented server loads overnight. To combat this, Meta is developing "trusted data environments" to keep autonomous agents within strict governance and security guardrails. Ultimately, Yagour emphasized that because modern infrastructure was built entirely for human interaction, adapting to the agent-driven flywheel is the most urgent challenge facing enterprise tech today.
