McDonald’s is testing a new Google‑backed AI drive‑thru system called ArchIQ, or Archy, after its previous IBM-powered bot became a viral failure. Early claims suggest that 90 percent of more than 1 million orders required no human intervention, but the real challenge is handling messy, real‑world customer behavior rather than clean demo scenarios. Competitors like Wendy’s and Taco Bell have also struggled with AI ordering, as background noise, customizations and impatient customers often break automated systems. McDonald’s now needs Archy to be invisible, reliable and fast, not clever, if it wants AI to truly improve the drive‑thru experience.
