China’s largest domestic DRAM maker, CXMT, is nearing completion of LPDDR6 R&D verification and could begin mass production later this year, potentially easing the global mobile‑memory crisis. LPDDR6 promises higher bandwidth, better efficiency, and improved performance for multitasking, gaming, camera processing, and on‑device AI — but it is expected to cost around 20% more than LPDDR5X. With LPDDR5X prices already up 78–83% in Q2 due to AI data‑center demand, smartphone makers are struggling to secure affordable memory. Samsung is reportedly reconsidering LPDDR6 for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, while Xiaomi may adopt it in an upcoming flagship. CXMT’s entry could give manufacturers more negotiating power, though political restrictions — especially around Apple using Chinese memory — remain a major obstacle. Even if CXMT succeeds, cheaper phones are not guaranteed, but increased supply could eventually reduce pressure and help LPDDR6 reach more devices beyond ultra‑premium models.
