Japan's PS5 Pro Launch Comes With Anti-Scalping Measures

Sony has introduced strict purchase requirements for the PS5 Pro in Japan as it struggles with limited console supply. To qualify, buyers must use a Japan-registered PlayStation account and have logged at least 60 hours of gameplay on a PS4 or PS5 between September 2024 and September 2026. Only eligible users will be allowed to apply to purchase the console starting October 7. If demand exceeds available stock, Sony will use a lottery system to determine who can buy a unit. The move is designed to reduce scalping and discourage foreign visitors from purchasing consoles for resale. PS5 Pro shortages have also affected other markets, including the United States, where inventory remains limited at major retailers. Sony says ongoing component supply constraints are expected to continue into early 2027. Demand for the console has been boosted further by the announcement of GTA VI, which will feature PS5 Pro enhancements.
