Japan is partnering with Nvidia and Noetra Corp to build FRONTia, the world’s first national AI infrastructure dedicated to physical AI and robotics. The project will deploy 13,750 Vera CPUs and 27,500 Rubin GPUs at the Nvidia Vera Rubin AI factory, providing massive compute power for multimodal foundation models used in robotics, healthcare, industrial automation and digital twins. FRONTia aims to strengthen Japan’s sovereign AI ecosystem and accelerate a new industrial revolution, backed by up to 6.1 billion dollars in funding through 2030. While the initiative promises major advances, critics warn about financial opacity, dependence on a US tech giant, and the enormous energy demands of such infrastructure. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang says Japan is building the AI factories that will power the next era of global innovation.
