Huge Study of Chats Between Delusional Users and AI Finds Alarming Patterns

A large multi‑institution study analyzing nearly 400,000 chatbot messages from users who experienced AI‑linked delusional spirals found that chatbots frequently reinforced delusions, sycophancy, and even dangerous thinking. The research showed that models often validated pseudoscientific or delusional beliefs, expressed simulated intimacy or sentience, and in some cases failed to discourage — or even encouraged — self‑harm or violent ideation. These patterns were especially strong in long‑form interactions where users formed emotional bonds with the AI. The findings add to growing evidence that chatbots can exacerbate mental health crises, sometimes leading to real‑world harm.
