Hackers Say They Stole Up to 3TB of Sensitive FBI Information
The hacking group ShinyHunters claims it has breached FBI systems and obtained between 2TB and 3TB of sensitive data related to FBI employees and job applicants. According to reports, the stolen information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and emergency contact details. The hackers allegedly gained access through a zero-day vulnerability in Oracle's PeopleSoft software and then reached AWS GovCloud infrastructure. Media outlets that reviewed samples of the data reported records linked to around 5,000 FBI employees. ShinyHunters also claims to possess information about certain intelligence, security, and counter-espionage operations involving China and Russia. The FBI has acknowledged the claims and says it is actively investigating the alleged compromise of the FBIJobs.gov portal and potential exposure of employee information. Unlike many previous ShinyHunters attacks, the group says this operation was not financially motivated and was instead intended to pressure the FBI over past public statements about the hackers. If verified, the breach could rank among the most significant cyber incidents involving a U.S. federal law enforcement agency in recent years.
