Google’s Gemma 4 lineup challenges open model leaders with four new variants
Google has launched Gemma 4, a new family of open weight models built on the same research as Gemini 3 and released under the more permissive Apache 2.0 license. The lineup includes four variants ranging from efficient 2B and 4B edge models for smartphones and Raspberry Pi to powerful 26B MoE and 31B dense models that rank among the top open models globally. All versions support multimodal inputs, large context windows, and improved reasoning, with the edge models offering major speed and battery gains. With over 400 million downloads across previous generations, Gemma 4 strengthens Google’s position in the open model ecosystem and expands enterprise deployment options.
