Google ends its 30 percent app store fee and welcomes third-party app stores

Google is overhauling its Play Store business model by eliminating the traditional 30% commission on app transactions. The company will instead take a reduced cut of 20%, or 15% in some cases, while subscriptions will drop to a 10% fee. Developers will also be allowed to use alternative payment systems and even direct users to external websites for purchases, making Android far more open than before. The changes stem partly from Google’s legal settlement with Epic Games and could reshape the mobile app economy by reducing platform fees and enabling competing app stores on Android.
