Gen Z is increasingly turning to physical media like DVDs, Blu-rays, vinyl records, and CDs as a pushback against rising streaming prices, content shuffling between platforms, and the lack of true ownership over digital purchases. This generation is more likely to subscribe temporarily to streaming services and cancel quickly, driving a surprising revival of traditional media formats. However, the convenience and lower barrier to entry of streaming means most aren't abandoning it entirely — they're supplementing it with physical collections.

Gen Z has been bombarded with information since childhood, and the shift to physical media might be a subconscious way of slowing things down — a form of mental rest. Streaming's endless catalogs create a paradox of choice: you're constantly forced to pick, which is stressful in itself. And when the majority of options are mediocre, your chances of choosing something genuinely good — and feeling satisfied afterward — are slim. Physical media also reintroduces ritual into the experience — the deliberate act of placing a vinyl record or inserting a disc is itself a form of slowing down, a tactile counterpoint to the endless scroll. That constraint and intentionality might be exactly what brings peace of mind.
