Federal Judge Blocks Enforcement of Anthropic AI Ban

A US federal judge has ruled that the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk was illegal, blocking certain federal agencies from enforcing President Trump’s order to stop using the company’s AI tools. Judge Rita Lin stated that the government’s actions were baseless and appeared to be retaliation for Anthropic’s criticism of the administration’s views on AI safety. The dispute began when the Department of Defense pressured Anthropic to weaken safeguards in its Claude model, which the company refused, citing concerns about mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. After tensions escalated, Trump ordered all federal agencies to phase out Anthropic’s services, leading to the company being labeled a supply chain risk. Anthropic sued the government in two federal courts, and this ruling marks a significant victory in one of those cases. However, the company remains under a second supply chain designation until another decision is made. Even if Anthropic wins both cases, the Pentagon is not obligated to resume collaboration with the company. Despite the controversy, Anthropic continues to grow rapidly, reporting record quarterly revenue and preparing for a major IPO later this year.
