Europe prepares mandatory removal of Huawei and ZTE from critical networks

The European Commission has renewed its warning against using Huawei and ZTE equipment, expanding the scope from 5G networks to all critical connectivity infrastructure. While the recommendation remains non-binding, it accompanies a new cybersecurity law that would make the exclusion of high-risk vendors mandatory within 36 months. The shift comes after years of limited voluntary compliance and growing concerns about geopolitical risk, supply-chain security and China’s potential retaliation. The move is part of a broader EU push for digital sovereignty, though replacing existing equipment across Europe’s networks will be costly and complex.
