Is Anthropic Preparing for an Investment Winter

A few days ago, the tech world woke up to an uncomfortable discovery: Anthropic had quietly removed Claude Code from its Pro plan for a subset of new users. The company was quick to downplay the move as "a test involving ~2% of new prosumer signups." Maybe so. But those 2% were still paying the same $20 for less. That tells you everything about where this is heading.

The $20 Illusion

Anthropic's Pro plan works — as long as you don't use it too hard. For casual chat, the math checks out. But the moment Claude Code enters the picture, with its massive context windows and hours-long agentic sessions, those $20 evaporate fast. A single productive afternoon can burn through an entire week's quota.

So removing Claude Code from Pro might actually be Anthropic trying to save users from themselves. No tool access, no disappointment when the limits hit. Neat solution — except it guts the very thing that made people sign up in the first place.

The Brand Problem

Claude's reputation as the "go-to tool for programmers" didn't happen by accident. It's Anthropic's most valuable marketing asset, arguably worth more than any ad campaign. Pulling Claude Code from the Pro tier doesn't just change a pricing page. It chips away at that perception.

A smarter play would be to subsidize the usage. Lower the effective token cost for Claude Code requests and treat the loss as a marketing expense. Yes, it's expensive. But so is every user acquisition strategy, and OpenAI isn't exactly tightening its belt right now. This is a land grab, and you don't win land grabs by retreating.

What Is Anthropic Actually Thinking?

The move raises two uncomfortable questions:

  1. Do they think AGI is around the corner? If so, today's developers are a temporary customer base — soon to be replaced by the very technology they're paying to use. It's a bold thesis, but even by Silicon Valley standards, it's a stretch.
  2. Are they bracing for winter? More likely, Anthropic sees the investment climate cooling and wants to be the AI company that burned the fewest billions before the music stops. Cutting expensive features from cheap plans is textbook defensive positioning.

The Competition Isn't Waiting

Here's the thing Anthropic can't afford to ignore: a Pro-tier enthusiast who doesn't need real-time agentic workflows can already get surprisingly far with ChatGPT's chat or Codex. It's slower. It takes more manual effort. But it's significantly cheaper, and for developers who are still learning, the hands-on involvement is arguably a feature, not a bug.

Against that backdrop, restricting Claude Code looks less like strategy and more like panic.

The Bottom Line

In the long run, AI platforms will likely win or lose on the strength of their ecosystems, not on how carefully they ration tokens this month. If Claude Code becomes a walled garden for $100+/month subscribers, Anthropic risks becoming a boutique tool while the competition captures the mass market.

The battle for AI dominance isn't just about who builds the best model. It's about who can afford to stay in the game the longest. And personally, I'm rooting for Anthropic.
