China Reclaims Supercomputing Crown with Record‑Breaking LineShine System
China has reclaimed the title for the world’s fastest supercomputer with its new LineShine system, achieving 2.198 exaflops and surpassing the US El Capitan machine. LineShine is the first system to exceed two exaflops of sustained double‑precision performance using CPUs only, built around a custom 304‑core processor with nearly 14 million total cores. Despite US technology embargoes, China succeeded by avoiding GPUs entirely and relying on its own proprietary architecture. The system is also highly efficient, delivering 52.07 gigaflops per watt while consuming 42.2 megawatts of power. This year’s Top500 list highlights growing architectural diversity, with multiple countries and vendors pursuing different paths to exascale computing.
