ASML Sounds Alarm Over Lack of Advanced Chip Production in Europe
ASML, the world's only supplier of EUV lithography systems, says it generated virtually no revenue from Europe in 2026 because European chipmakers purchased no new lithography equipment. The company argues that EU subsidies for semiconductor factories are not enough and that Europe must also create stronger demand for locally produced chips. ASML executive Frank Heemskerk warned that Europe lacks sufficient customers for advanced chip manufacturing, despite efforts to attract fab investments. The company is urging the European Union to encourage major industrial buyers to source more semiconductors from European suppliers. While several large semiconductor projects are underway in Ireland, Germany, and elsewhere, most focus on mature manufacturing nodes rather than cutting-edge technologies that require ASML's most expensive EUV tools. ASML's concern is that Europe is falling behind regions such as Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, and Japan, where investment in advanced chip production remains significantly higher. The company believes that creating a stronger market for European-made chips would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to expand production within the region. The comments highlight the growing gap between Europe's semiconductor ambitions and its ability to develop a self-sustaining advanced chip ecosystem.
