Aptoide becomes the first alternative Android marketplace on Google Play in the US
Aptoide has become the first competing Android app store to return to Google Play in the US, marking a major shift in Google’s long‑criticized restrictions on alternative app marketplaces. For the first time in over a decade, American users can install a rival app store directly from Google Play instead of sideloading it. Aptoide, which offers more than 40,000 apps to 25 million monthly users, had been blocked from Play distribution until recent legal changes. The move follows Judge James Donato’s ruling in the Epic Games antitrust case, which forced Google to allow third‑party app stores and grant them access to Play’s infrastructure through the Play Catalog Access Program. This program lets independent stores offer apps from Google’s catalog while remaining fully separate. Epic’s lawsuit, launched in 2020, ultimately led to Google dropping Play Store commissions and easing installation of alternative stores. Aptoide’s return signals a new era of competition in the Android ecosystem and could pave the way for more rival marketplaces to follow.
