Apple says ex engineer used zero day bug to steal confidential files for OpenAI

Apple has revealed new details in its lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming a former engineer exploited a rare zero day authentication bug to access and download confidential files weeks after leaving the company. According to the complaint, ex employee Chang Liu retained access to Apple’s internal network using an Apple issued laptop he never returned, pulling detailed engineering documents, unreleased product specifications, and proprietary hardware data. Apple alleges Liu also used the credentials and laptop of another Apple employee, Yu Ting Peng, while already working at OpenAI. The case highlights how dangerous lapses in decommissioning employee accounts can be, especially when authentication flaws allow continued access. Apple is seeking a jury trial and injunctions to prevent OpenAI from using any of the allegedly stolen information, while OpenAI maintains it has no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.
