Alphabet to Replace Verizon in the Dow Jones Industrial Average

Google's parent company, Alphabet, is set to join the prestigious Dow Jones Industrial Average stock index, officially replacing telecommunications giant Verizon. Announcing the change, S&P Global explained that adding Alphabet will significantly strengthen the index's exposure to dynamic and emerging areas of the United States economy, specifically artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and digital advertising. The transition will take effect prior to the opening of trading on Monday, June 29, 2026. Because the Dow Jones is a price weighted index, Verizon's low share price meant it contributed a meager 0.5% to the index, whereas Alphabet's shares trade at roughly seven times that value. Alphabet joins other major technology companies already in the index, including Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Nvidia.
